Welcome to the Jukebox. This is where we share the music of artists who have peaked our interest on both the local and international scene but are not yet household names.
Today’s Band: Color Theory
How I Found Them:
In addition to being a recording artist and mastering engineer, Brian Hazard (the brain behind Color Theory) also runs an extremely informative blog for independent musicians. Titled Passive Promotion it was actually through his posts that I became acquainted with his music.
My Thoughts/Initial Impression:
There is a haunting beauty to Color Theory’s music that swings between sad smiles and happy tears. Uplifting and atmospheric, it reminds me of my earliest memories of being mesmerized by British new-wave synth pop on the radio and America’s Top 10 (am I showing my age?
). The richly layered appreggios and staccato chords that took me, in my mind, across landscapes and cities I had never known of.
Reminds Me Of:
Depeche Mode, Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service
From their Wikipedia Entry:
Hazard, the sole member of Color Theory, began studying the piano at the relatively late age of thirteen. He took lessons on and off through his high school years, while playing piano in the school jazz band and mallet percussion in the drumline. In 1992, Hazard was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from California State University, Long Beach. The following year he enrolled in songwriting and recording classes at Golden West College, and began writing songs for the first Color Theory album.

Thanks for recognizing Color Theory! I am a huge fan of theirs at the moment ever since I heard "Photobooth" on Pandora. The music is so fluid and vivid and hits you in all the right places! Many props to Brian Hazard!
Thanks Alli
I enjoy pointing out artists who are still below the radar, and hope that Brian gets a few new fans from this as well
